Background:
I returned to FOCUS Media Journal for 2018-2019 to lead the design for their 39th volume. FOCUS provides a space where undergraduate students can publish their research. Topics relate to the diversity of modern culture.

What I Did:
I was in charge of designing, illustrating, and formatting all visual elements including illustrations, accents, and text. During this year, I also pitched for the Journal to funding boards and designed flyers for fundraisers, events and social media as we decided to expand our audience.

Challenges:
Providing creative direction to team, time restraints, budget, outreach

Project Duration:
September 2018 - May 2019

My Roles:
Graphic designer, Illustrator, Layout Editor, Representative

Tools:
Adobe Illustrator & InDesign
Sketching Process:
I start brainstorming on paper. To clarify what the topics were, I had to discuss with the team, who were also unsure at the beginning. We wanted robots and technology. I also planned out the layout of the cover and insert pages.
After deciding on the final illustrations, I choose a fun summer color palette to fit Focus’ bright demeanor. The goal was to create an eye-catching cover that illustrates the theme.
I was able to independently format and design the entire publication without being watched over. My leader trusted that I could do this on my own. I also learned to plan and use InDesign more efficiently.
Marketing and Outreach:
Focus Media Journal wanted to grow bigger this year, so I pitched the idea of producing advertising flyers rather than just sending emails as we have in previous years. We advertised our journal on school monitors, so I had to make sure the designs had fluid formatting and can change to fit different dimensions.
Looking Back:
This was the first large project where I took primary responsibility for design and execution. Despite limited resources and time as full-time students, we successfully launched the annual edition, hosted the inaugural launch party, and expanded the visual communications to support recruitment efforts.
